A Complete Guide to Composite Bonding

Composite tooth bonding is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that has skyrocketed in popularity over the years because of how effective it is in enhancing smiles. Composite bonding teeth fixes chipped teeth, closes gaps, reshapes teeth, and addresses all manner of imperfections. The following guide will delve further into this below, so if you’re interested in learning what composite bonding could do for you, read on to discover more.

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding, otherwise known as dental bonding or tooth bonding, is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that works to improve the appearance of teeth via the application of a tooth-coloured composite resin material. The resin is carefully sculpted and shaped to match the teeth’s natural contours, correcting imperfections and enhancing aesthetics.

The process usually starts with the dentist selecting a shade of composite resin that closely matches the patient’s natural tooth colour. Following this, the tooth’s surface is prepared by roughening it slightly and applying a conditioning liquid to help the bonding material adhere securely. The composite resin is then applied, moulded, and shaped to achieve the desired result. Once the resin is in place, a curing light is used to harden it, and the final adjustments can then be made to create a seamless finish.

Perhaps the number one advantage of composite bonding is that it allows for the production of natural-looking results and preserves a considerable amount of the natural tooth structure. What’s more, the procedure is relatively quick and minimally invasive compared to other cosmetic dental treatments.

Composite Bonding vs Veneers

Both composite bonding and veneers are used to enhance the appearance of teeth; however, they are two drastically different things. The many differences are explored in further detail below:

Both composite bonding and veneers are used to enhance the appearance of teeth; however, they are two drastically different things. The many differences are explored in further detail below:

  • Material – With composite bonding, a tooth-coloured resin material is directly applied to the teeth, which is then sculpted and shaped to achieve the desired outcome. On the other hand, veneers are thin shells that are generally made of porcelain or composite material, which are created in a dental laboratory and boned to the front surface of the teeth.
  • Preparation – Minimal preparation of the natural tooth’s structure is required for composite bonding. With veneers, though, a thin layer of enamel typically needs to be removed from the surface.
  • Durability – Both composite bonding and veneers last for years with proper care; however, veneers are more susceptible to damage from biting hard objects.
  • Cost – Typically speaking, composite bonding is more cost-effective than veneers.

How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

There are a number of factors that affect the longevity of composite bonding, including the patient’s lifestyle choices, diet, and oral hygiene habits. On average, though, composite bonding lasts anywhere from five to 10 years before it requires any touch-ups or replacements.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, such as brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and attending regular dental check-ups, allows you to maximise the lifespan of composite bonding. Similarly, biting hard objects, using teeth as tools, and other habits that can damage bonded teeth should be avoided.

In some instances, composite bonding requires repair or replacement sooner; this applies if they end up discoloured, chipped, or worn from wear and tear. Routine dental visits will give your dentist the opportunity to assess the condition of the bonding and recommend any maintenance or touch-up procedures.

How Much is Composite Bonding?

The cost of composite bonding depends on the amount of work needed for each tooth; however, as a guide, it will cost around £250-£300 per tooth. In addition to the cost of the work, you will need to pay £50 for a consultation appointment, during which you’ll be provided with a full written quotation for your treatment.

At Sutton Dental & Implant Clinic, we offer three types of membership: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Regardless of which membership type you opt for, you’re entitled to 20% off dental treatment, meaning you could benefit from composite bonding for a reduced fee.

Our Sliver membership costs £22.55 a month, our Gold membership costs £35.20 a month, and our Platinum membership costs £48.40 a month. Therefore, if you’re opting for the membership route, you’ll also have to factor in your membership costs. In the long run, though, our membership options allow you to cut the costs of your dental treatments significantly.

To become a member, you’ll need to head to our membership page and fill out the form at the bottom of the page. Following this, a member of our team will be in touch to get you set up on our system.

From the initial consultation to the completion of my dental implants I have had faultless treatment as a new patient at Sutton Dental and Implant centre.
All the staff are welcoming and efficient, the practice modern and clean and the surgeries reassuringly up to date and unintimidating. The treatment plan was clearly explained , and I was given written confirmation to guide me through the whole treatment process. I cannot recommend Dr Jain and his team highly enough.
